Palm Springs in October: Weather, Events and the Season Reopening

October is the hinge month in Palm Springs: the brutal part of summer is over, the weekly markets and outdoor events restart, and the season's first big event weekend arrives with Modernism Week's Fall Preview. It is also still warm enough that the pool remains the centre of the day. Events and venues below were checked against official sources on September 10, 2026.

The weather, honestly

Early October still feels like summer - afternoons in the 90s are normal in the first week. By mid-month the evenings turn genuinely comfortable, and the last week of October is many locals' favourite weather of the year: warm days, cool nights, no wind season yet. The pool is non-negotiable in the first half of the month and still very usable at the end. The weather by month guide has the full temperature ranges.

Modernism Week Fall Preview (October 15-18, 2026)

The season's first architecture weekend: a condensed version of February's Modernism Week with home tours, double-decker bus tours, talks and parties. Tickets are released in advance and the popular home tours sell out - treat it like the February event and book early. Dates confirmed against the organiser's own calendar. The Modernism Week guide explains which tours are worth it and where to stay.

The weekly calendar restarts

October is when the outdoor weekly rhythm returns after summer:

  • VillageFest takes over downtown Palm Canyon Drive every Thursday evening (seasonal start times - the VillageFest guide has parking and layout).
  • Farmers markets resume in Palm Springs, Old Town La Quinta, Desert Hot Springs and Indio on their weekend mornings.
  • The College of the Desert Street Fair runs Saturday and Sunday mornings from October.
  • The Palm Springs Art Museum free Thursday evenings continue.
  • The Perez Road Art & Design Walk in Cathedral City returns for its season (fourth Friday).

Hiking season begins

From roughly mid-October, morning hikes become realistic again. Start with the shaded palm oases in Indian Canyons or the waterfall trail at Tahquitz Canyon - go at opening, carry water, and check posted conditions. The Aerial Tramway is the year-round fallback: it is always dramatically cooler at the top.

Planning and prices

October sits between the summer deals and the winter peak. Early month can still price like shoulder season; Modernism Week Fall Preview weekend and Halloween weekend book up and price like high season. If you are coming for the Fall Preview, book the hotel when you book the tour tickets. For a ready-made short trip, the weekend itinerary and three-day itinerary both work as-is in October.
