What the museum actually is

Palm Springs Art Museum is not a single building. The three-day midweek closure is the single most common trip-planning mistake here. If your only free afternoon is a Tuesday, plan the Aerial Tramway or Indian Canyons instead and come back Thursday. 1. The main galleries of modern and contemporary art, which include the strongest holdings and the biggest names. 2. Art of the West and the Native American and Indigenous collections — the works that root the museum in the desert rather than making it a generic city art museum. 3. The sculpture terraces and Aluminaire House outside, a restored 1931 modernist prototype now on the museum campus.

When to go

The museum is indoors and cool, which makes it the reliable option in summer heat, spring wind or the rare rain. Weekend late mornings are busiest; Friday morning and the first hour of Free Thursday Night are the calmest useful windows.
