Rancho Mirage sits in the middle of the valley and has long been its most discreet address - the city of presidential retreats, country clubs behind long hedges, and the Betty Ford Center. For visitors it offers big ridge-top resorts with the best elevated views in the Coachella Valley, the Sunnylands estate and gardens, and The River, an open-air dining and cinema complex on Highway 111.

Sunnylands

The Annenberg estate is the single most interesting thing to do in Rancho Mirage. The free visitor center and nine acres of desert gardens are open to the public Thursday through Sunday in season; tours of the mid-century house itself require timed tickets that are released on a schedule and go quickly. Both Reagan and Obama hosted foreign leaders here.

The ridge

Rancho Mirage is the only valley city with hotels built up on the mountain shoulder rather than on the flat. That elevation buys a genuinely different experience - sunset views across the entire valley floor, cooler evening breezes, and infinity pools that look out over the lights of Palm Desert and Indio.

The River and everyday life

The River at Rancho Mirage is a walkable outdoor center with restaurants, a cinema and a waterway running through it, and it functions as the city's de facto downtown in the evenings. Agua Caliente Rancho Mirage adds a casino, showroom and spa a few minutes away.

Who it suits

Couples, spa trips, multi-generational family groups who want space, and anyone who wants a quiet resort base within fifteen minutes of both Palm Springs and Indio.
