Palm Springs Golf Courses: Where to Play in the Coachella Valley

Golf is why a large share of winter visitors come to the Coachella Valley at all. The numbers are genuinely unusual: more than 100 courses inside a valley you can drive end to end in 45 minutes, from private tournament layouts to municipal tracks where a twilight round costs less than dinner. The trick is not finding a course - it is matching the course to your budget, your handicap, and the month you are visiting.

The best public and resort courses for visitors

Indian Wells Golf Resort is the default recommendation. Two championship courses, the Celebrity and the Players, both immaculately conditioned, both walkable from the adjacent Hyatt Regency. Expect the highest green fees in the public tier and the best overall experience.

Escena Golf Club (Palm Springs) is the most convenient serious round in the valley - five minutes from the airport, ten from downtown Palm Springs, with a Nicklaus design, wide fairways, and a clubhouse that does a very good post-round lunch. Good choice for the day you fly in or out.

Classic Club (Palm Desert) is a long, water-heavy Arnold Palmer layout that hosted PGA Tour events. It plays hard from the back tees and beautifully from the middle ones.

Westin Mission Hills (Rancho Mirage) offers a Pete Dye and a Gary Player course on one property - variety without changing hotels.

Marriott Shadow Ridge (Palm Desert) is a Nick Faldo design with excellent conditioning and a strong practice facility.

Tahquitz Creek and Desert Willow cover the value end: municipal and city-owned courses with real quality, noticeably lower fees, and easier tee times.

What you will actually pay

Green fees in this valley swing more by season than by course.

• January-April (peak): $100-$250 at the marquee public courses, $60-$120 at municipals.
• May and October (shoulder): roughly 30-40% off peak.
• June-September (summer): $45-$95 at courses that charge triple in March, and twilight rates below $40 are common.

Carts are usually included at resort courses and sometimes extra at municipals. Replay rates - a second 18 the same day at a steep discount - are one of the best-value plays in the valley and rarely advertised.

Tee-time strategy

In peak season, book morning times one to two weeks out; the 7-9 a.m. window on weekends goes first. Afternoon rounds in winter are pleasant and easier to get. In summer, do the opposite of your instincts and play the earliest slot available - by 10 a.m. it is genuinely hot, and by noon it is a bad idea. Twilight rounds in summer, starting around 3-4 p.m., are the sweet spot: cooling temperatures, low rates, and empty fairways.

Desert golf is different

Wind picks up most afternoons, especially through the west end of the valley near Palm Springs. Overseeded fairways in October and November mean temporary closures and slightly different playing conditions - worth a phone call if you are travelling specifically for golf that month. The ball flies farther in dry desert air, so club down before you decide the course is short. And bring more water than you think you need in any month.

Autumn 2026 course maintenance

Checked October 9, 2026: Desert Willow's official maintenance schedule lists Mountain View closed September 21–October 22, reopening October 23. Firecliff is scheduled to close November 9–December 25, reopening December 26. These are two different courses at the same resort, so specify which one you want when booking.

Check the operator's latest schedule before reserving a stay, including practice-facility availability and any restrictions after reopening. These dates apply to Desert Willow only; verify other courses separately.

Dress code and etiquette

Collared shirts and no denim is the reliable baseline at resort and private courses; municipals are more relaxed. Soft spikes only. Most resort courses do not permit walking during peak season.

Where to stay if golf is the point

Indian Wells, Palm Desert, and La Quinta put you closest to the highest concentration of courses. If you want downtown Palm Springs nightlife with your golf, base there and drive 20-30 minutes east to the better layouts, or play Escena and Tahquitz Creek in town.
