The Best Hotels in Palm Desert

Palm Desert is the valley''s civic and shopping centre: El Paseo for galleries and restaurants, the Living Desert for a genuinely good half-day, McCallum Theatre for touring shows, and a golf corridor that runs the length of the city. It is a different trip from Palm Springs — less design pilgrimage, more comfortable resort.

Where to stay in Palm Desert

There are three practical zones. El Paseo and the blocks immediately north put you walking distance from the best concentration of restaurants and galleries in the valley — the closest thing Palm Desert has to a walkable holiday. The Highway 111 corridor is where most of the mid-price and chain inventory sits: convenient, unromantic, well priced. And the south and west edges, up against the Santa Rosa foothills, hold the golf resorts with the views.

What it costs

High season, January through April, runs roughly $220-400 for a good room and $450 and up at the resorts. Summer roughly halves that. Resort fees of $25-40 are standard and often include the fitness centre and self-parking, which matters more here than in Palm Springs because nothing is walkable outside El Paseo.

Golf, and whether you need a resort

Palm Desert has strong public golf — Desert Willow in particular — so you do not need to book a golf resort to play well. If you want cart-to-tee convenience and a caddie programme, the resorts earn it. If you want two rounds and a pool, a mid-price hotel plus a public tee time is considerably cheaper.

When to come

October and November, then March and April, are the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights, El Paseo fully open. December and January bring the cheapest resort rates in the high season because nights are genuinely cold. Summer is hot and quiet, and many El Paseo restaurants trim hours.

Getting around

Palm Springs International Airport is 15-20 minutes away. A car is effectively required. Downtown Palm Springs is 20-25 minutes northwest, Indio and the festival grounds 20 minutes east, Joshua Tree''s south entrance about an hour.
