Indian Wells is the most purely resort-oriented city in the valley. There is no traditional walkable downtown, and most lodging is resort-oriented; however, Sands Hotel & Spa is a genuine 46-room boutique alternative. What there is: a championship golf resort open to the public, a major tennis stadium that hosts the BNP Paribas Open, and a handful of large properties with serious pools and spas.

What you are choosing between

The properties differ mainly in scale and personality rather than quality. Some lean conference and family, with waterslides and multiple pools; others lean adult and spa-led, with quieter grounds and better restaurants. The large resorts have extensive amenities and sometimes meaningful distances between rooms and facilities. Check the current resort fee, parking policy and any walking or cart-shuttle arrangements for your actual booking.

The tennis question

The BNP Paribas Open in March is the busiest fortnight of the Indian Wells year and one of the busiest in the valley. Demand and rates can rise sharply, some stays have minimum-night requirements, and official tournament packages may be available. If tennis is the reason for your trip, compare cancellable rooms once your dates are settled. If your dates are flexible, compare the same stay outside tournament dates before committing.

Indian Wells Golf Resort operates two public courses. Hotel rate eligibility for golf discounts or priority booking must be confirmed with the provider. Book spa treatments and check non-guest access separately; a hotel room or resort fee is not a spa appointment.

Rates and season

Rates depend on exact dates, room types, and promotions; do not treat a generic seasonal range as a live quote. Compare all-in prices for the same occupancy and cancellation terms.

Practical notes

Palm Springs International Airport, El Paseo in Palm Desert and downtown Palm Springs are separate travel destinations. Check travel times and venue access for the date and time you expect to travel. Because everything requires driving, ask whether self-parking is included before you accept a valet-only property.

Which Indian Wells hotel is best for you?

• Grand Hyatt Indian Wells Resort & Villas: best starting point for families planning pool days. The property describes a water park with lazy river, splash pad and dueling water slides, plus guest rooms, suites and villas. • Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa: best starting point for travelers who want a large main pool, spa, and resort activities. Marriott lists an outdoor pool with a sandy-beach section, Spa Esmeralda, Camp Esmeralda and access to Indian Wells Golf Resort. • Sands Hotel & Spa: a smaller, design-led couples' alternative that the old guide overlooked. Its own site describes 46 rooms, the Pink Cabana restaurant, full-service spa and an over-18 registered-guest policy. This is not a family water-park substitute. Official Sands details.
• Tommy Bahama Miramonte: an alternative to research for travelers seeking a spa-oriented resort. Compare its current guest room categories, pool access and cancellation terms directly rather than assuming it includes tournament transport.

Tennis week: distance is not a shuttle entitlement

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden lodging guide explains why Homewood Suites La Quinta deserves consideration alongside the bigger named Indian Wells resorts. The tournament's official hotel list places it approximately 0.8 miles from the venue; that figure is not a verified walking route. If you need a shuttle, check the current tournament transportation information and ask whether your particular booking qualifies. A standard OTA hotel room should not be presented as an official tournament package.

What to compare before you book

• Full price: start with rate + resort fee + local taxes + parking + any mandatory event package costs. A hotel's advertised starting rate is not a quote for your tournament dates.
• Room fit: adjoining rooms, sofa beds, villa occupancy and accessible features are not guaranteed by a generic hotel listing.
• Pool fit: separate family-waterpark days from quiet adults-oriented swim time.

Resort fees and parking: compare the complete stay

Grand Hyatt publishes a daily resort fee and a higher fee for 2027 bookings. Renaissance Esmeralda also charges a resort fee and paid parking. Sands is different: its published policy calls the $42 daily resort package optional. Self-parking is included in that package; ask about parking if you decline it.
