The Best Spas in Greater Palm Springs

Palm Springs has been a wellness destination since long before the word existed — the hot mineral springs under the valley floor are why the town is here at all. Today that history splits into two very different products.

Mineral springs versus resort spas

Desert Hot Springs, on the north side of the valley, sits on a genuine geothermal aquifer. The small hotels and spas there fill their pools with hot mineral water straight from the ground, and the experience is soaking rather than treatments. It is lower key, cheaper, and the actual thing.

Resort spas in Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells and Palm Springs are the full modern package: treatment menus, steam and sauna circuits, relaxation lounges, pools you can spend a day at. Water is heated municipal water, not mineral, with the exception of the tribal spa downtown, which taps the original hot spring.

Day passes

This is the underused move. Most resort spas sell day passes to non-guests, typically $50-150, sometimes waived with a treatment booking. If your hotel does not have a spa, a day pass at a large resort is usually better value than a single treatment elsewhere.

What treatments cost

Expect $180-320 for a 60-minute massage at a resort spa, $120-200 at an independent, and $30-60 for mineral soaking access in Desert Hot Springs. Add an automatic service charge of 18-22 percent at most resorts — check whether it is included before tipping again.

Booking and timing

Winter weekends book out two to three weeks ahead, and Valentine''s and holiday weekends much further. Summer is wide open and heavily discounted. Morning appointments are easier to get and leave the afternoon for the pool.

Practical notes

Arrive 45 minutes early to use the circuit you are paying for — the facilities are usually the better half of the value. Many resort spas are adults-only even at family properties. And hydrate hard: treatments plus dry desert air dehydrate people faster than they expect.
