Palm Springs vs. Palm Desert vs. La Quinta: Where Should You Stay?

Choose Palm Springs if you want to walk to dinner, bars and the Thursday-night VillageFest street fair, you care about mid-century architecture and design hotels, or you are traveling without a car. Nightlife and dining: Palm Springs wins, and it is not close

Palm Springs is the valley's evening city. Downtown and the Arenas Road district concentrate the bars — tiki (see our tiki bars guide), cocktails along Palm Canyon Drive, and the LGBTQ+ bar strip on Arenas — and the restaurant bench is the deepest in the desert, from Workshop Kitchen + Bar to the taco shops of the north end. If your ideal night is dinner you can walk to followed by a bar you can walk to after that, this is your city. Palm Desert and La Quinta both have good restaurants, but the evening ends earlier and the drive home is longer.

Shopping and polished dining: Palm Desert

Palm Desert is the valley's retail center: El Paseo is the walkable luxury shopping street, and The Shops at Palm Desert handles the mall end. The dining scene skews polished — see our Palm Desert restaurant guide — and the city sits roughly in the geographic middle of the valley, which makes it the practical base if your group is splitting time between Palm Springs and the east valley. It is also the easiest of the three with kids, which is why we gave it a dedicated family guide.

Golf, resorts and quiet: La Quinta

La Quinta is the valley's resort-and-golf town. La Quinta Resort & Club — the 1926 hideaway where the valley's resort era began — anchors a city of championship courses, spa resorts and Old Town La Quinta, a genuinely pretty courtyard district of restaurants and boutiques that stays calm even in high season. Evenings are dinner-and-done; if you want a bar scene afterward, you will be driving to Palm Springs. During Coachella and Stagecoach weekends, La Quinta's location near the Empire Polo Club in Indio makes it a strategic base.

Getting around from each base

All three sit on or near Highway 111, the valley's main spine. Palm Springs is about 20 minutes from Palm Desert and 30 from La Quinta in normal traffic; festival weekends can double that.
