Two Palm Desert bases for a zoo visit: an El Paseo hotel for dining and shopping, and a larger resort for a longer family break.
| Hotel | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
Hotel Paseo, Autograph Collection4-star hotel class | Zoo visit paired with El Paseo | Arrange transport to the zoo |
JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa4.5-star hotel class | Zoo outing within a longer resort trip | Budget separately for resort activities |
Stay for the whole trip, not just the zoo gate
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is at 47900 Portola Avenue in Palm Desert. If it is the main outing on a short break, a Palm Desert hotel keeps your accommodation in the same city. If it is one stop in a week of activities, weigh the rest of your itinerary before moving hotels solely for this visit.
This shortlist compares two established Palm Desert options with different strengths. It is not a claim that they are the closest or cheapest hotels to the zoo. Plan a drive or arranged ride from either property; neither is presented here as a walk-to-the-gate choice.
Hotel Paseo: combine the zoo with El Paseo
Hotel Paseo, Autograph Collection is at 45-400 Larkspur Lane, near El Paseo's shops and restaurants. Marriott's local-area guide places The Living Desert about two miles from the hotel.
That setting makes sense when you want a zoo outing and then a choice of places to eat around El Paseo. It is also a useful fit for travelers who prefer to spend part of the day exploring the surrounding district rather than remaining at a large resort.
Do not translate the published distance into a guaranteed walking route or drive time. Check the route for your departure time, and arrange a return ride if you are visiting without a car. Start with the official Hotel Paseo local-area guide and our El Paseo shopping guide.
JW Marriott Desert Springs: make the zoo one part of a resort break
JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa is the alternative to consider when the hotel itself is a substantial part of the holiday. Its official property information lists pools, golf, tennis, a spa and the JW Entertainment Zone.
Choose it for a trip with room in the schedule to use those facilities. For a single overnight stay built around the zoo, compare whether the resort experience is worth the total cost to your group. A list of available activities does not mean every activity, rental or treatment comes with the room.
Confirm age restrictions, reservations and additional charges for anything you expect to use. The official JW Marriott resort page is the place to check current offerings.
Build the day around your admission plans
Check the zoo's date-specific hours and tickets before setting your hotel departure time. Leave room for breakfast, getting everyone ready and reaching the entrance. If visiting with children, a flexible afternoon back at the hotel may work better than stacking another major attraction immediately afterward.
Keep the zoo's official planning page handy for directions, maps and visitor information. Its route from Highway 111 follows Portola Avenue south. Use the actual zoo address when arranging transport, rather than a generic Palm Desert destination.
Our Living Desert visitor guide covers the attraction in more depth. For the rest of the weekend, see Palm Desert with kids.
Check these details before reserving
Compare the room's actual bedding and maximum occupancy, not just its photographs. Ask about connecting rooms if your family needs them, and distinguish a request from a confirmed booking arrangement.
Add parking, mandatory hotel charges and any breakfast costs to the rate comparison. Keep zoo admission separate unless the specific package explicitly includes it. Neither hotel recommendation assumes a complimentary zoo shuttle.
For a wider choice of accommodation, use our Palm Desert hotel guide. If your itinerary is mostly in downtown Palm Springs, compare the tradeoff in our Palm Springs versus Palm Desert guide before choosing your base.
Official hotel and zoo information was checked October 9, 2026. This guide compares location and trip fit; it does not report a firsthand hotel inspection.
Staying for WildLights
WildLights 2026 runs on selected nights November 24–December 30 at The Living Desert, from 6–9 p.m. Select the actual event night before booking a hotel. December 17 is for adults 18+, so families should choose another operating date.
Plan a drive or arranged ride from Hotel Paseo or JW Marriott Desert Springs, including the return after the event. Hotel bookings do not include WildLights unless a particular package explicitly says so. If visiting the zoo by day as well, all daytime guests must leave by 5 p.m. and enter again from 6 p.m., even with a combined ticket.
WildLights dates and entry rules checked October 15, 2026 against the official event calendar.
