The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens: Hours, Tickets and How to Do It Right

Hours and where to go

The zoo's official visitor page lists 8 a.m.–5 p.m., October 1–May 31, with last admission at 4 p.m. Summer hours, June 1–September 30, are 7 a.m.–1:30 p.m., with last admission at 12:30 p.m. The zoo is closed December 25.

Use 47900 Portola Avenue, Palm Desert, CA 92260 for arrival. Parking is free according to the zoo. Check the current calendar and any operating notices before traveling.

Daytime tickets and what they include

At our October 15 check, the official page listed $44.95 for adults 18+, $34.95 for children ages 3–17, and free admission under age 3. Prices may vary by visit date, and the zoo requires advance ticket purchase. Use its official planning and ticket page for a current quote.

Check separately for giraffe feeding, tours, encounters or other activities you want to book. Compare membership with the visits you will actually make rather than relying on a fixed number of visits to recover its cost.

Build a daytime visit around your interests

The zoo combines animal habitats, desert gardens and the model train exhibit. Browse the current map and daily activity schedule, then choose the stops your group wants most. The zoo recommends allowing two to three hours at a comfortable pace; add time for booked activities, meals and breaks.

An early arrival can be useful when temperatures rise, but animal sightings are not guaranteed by a time of day. For nature trails, check the specific route's current access and conditions separately from the main zoo visit.

A flexible three-hour zoo plan

Use this as a planning outline, not a timed tour. Pick your route from the current zoo map when you arrive so you are not crossing the grounds repeatedly.

• First hour: head toward the animal habitats your group most wants to see. Choose two priorities before arriving; leave room to linger when an animal is active.
• Second hour: continue through nearby habitats and gardens, with a drink and rest break. If you booked an encounter, build this part of the visit around its check-in time.
• Final hour: choose between more habitats, the model trains or a splash-pad stop. Leave some flexibility for walking back to the entrance and collecting belongings.

With young children, a satisfying shorter visit can be better than completing the map. With adults who enjoy plants or photography, give the gardens their own time instead of treating them as the space between animal exhibits. If you only have a short morning, skip a separately scheduled activity that would dictate the whole visit.

Splash-pad packing and admission

The official Oasis Splash Pad page says access is included with zoo admission or membership. At our October 20, 2026 check, it listed daily hours of 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; reconfirm for your date, especially during the zoo's shorter summer operating season.

Bring a towel, a dry change of clothes and a bag for wet things. The zoo recommends swim shoes and requires swim diapers for children who are not fully toilet trained. Children need supervision throughout; food, glass containers and water toys are not allowed in the splash area. Rental lockers are available on a first-come basis. Weather, maintenance or operations can close the splash pad, so keep another stop in mind.

Plan the whole family's cost

Using the admission prices listed above, two adults and two children ages 3–17 would total $159.80 for daytime admission before any checkout adjustments or extras. That is an illustration based on the published prices, not a quote for your date. A 17-year-old falls in the child category; an 18-year-old needs an adult ticket.

Set a separate allowance for food, souvenirs and any animal experiences. Decide which paid extra matters before checking out, rather than assuming a general ticket includes every activity pictured on the website. Pair the zoo with an easy afternoon

If you combine daytime admission with WildLights, plan where you will eat and rest between visits. The required exit and evening re-entry mean this is two visits with a break, even on a combined ticket. Keep evening layers accessible, and leave enough time to return through admission without rushing dinner.

Visiting with children

Start with a manageable set of animal habitats and a flexible break rather than trying to cover every activity. The Oasis Splash Pad has its own operating information; check access and hours before promising a splash stop.

WildLights is a separate evening visit

WildLights 2026 runs on selected nights November 24–December 30, from 6–9 p.m., with last admission at 8:30 p.m. It requires an evening ticket or a combined daytime-and-evening option.

All daytime guests must leave by 5 p.m. and enter again for WildLights at 6 p.m., even if they bought a combined ticket. December 17 is adults only, ages 18+. The event does not run every night and is closed on Christmas Day. Use the dedicated guide to match the date and ticket to your group.
