A Palm Springs Weekend Itinerary: 48 Hours That Actually Work
Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, built around heat, reservations and the mountain
Palm Springs Spots Editors · Published Sep 10, 2026 · Updated Sep 10, 2026

Two nights is the classic Palm Springs trip, and it is enough - if you do not try to cram in a day trip or a midday hike. This plan assumes a Friday arrival and a Sunday departure, front-loads what needs booking, and leaves real pool time in the middle. Every business named here was checked against current sources on September 10, 2026.
| Choice | Best for | Book ahead? |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown or Uptown hotel | Walking to dinner and bars | Yes - winter weekends |
| Indian Canyons morning | An easy, shady first hike | No - pay at the gate |
| Aerial Tramway morning | Summer-friendly mountain time | Yes - timed tickets |
| Bootlegger Tiki | Serious cocktails in a tiny room | No - arrive before 9pm |
| High Bar at Kimpton Rowan | The rooftop sunset view | Call to confirm access |
Before you arrive
Two things sell out on weekends: dinner tables and Aerial Tramway timed tickets. Book both before you leave home - the Aerial Tramway guide explains timed entry, and the where to stay guide will help you pick a base. Stay downtown or Uptown if you want to walk at night; the Palm Springs without a car guide shows exactly what that unlocks.
Friday evening - Palm Canyon and one good bar
Do not plan anything ambitious tonight. Check in, then walk the downtown strip on Palm Canyon Drive. Dinner options that are reliably worth a reservation: Workshop Kitchen + Bar for the room, Cheeky's is breakfast-only so save it, and for a first-night dinner downtown pick something within a short walk of your hotel rather than driving across town.
After dinner, one bar - not four. Bootlegger Tiki for serious cocktails (tiny, arrive before 9pm), High Bar at Kimpton Rowan for the rooftop view, or Melvyn's at Ingleside Estate for old Palm Springs piano-bar atmosphere. The best bars guide and cocktail bars guide cover the full scene.
Saturday morning - breakfast, then the mountain or the canyon
Cheeky's (go before 8:30am or expect the line) or King's Highway at the Ace for breakfast. Then one active thing, done early:
- Option A: Indian Canyons. Andreas Canyon is the easy, shady choice; see the Indian Canyons guide for trail comparisons and hours. October through May only - in summer it is too hot by mid-morning.
- Option B: The Aerial Tramway. Take a morning slot; it is 30-40 degrees cooler at the top, which makes it the summer-friendly option. Book ahead.
Saturday afternoon - the pool is the plan
From roughly 1pm to 5pm, do not schedule anything off-property. This is the part of the weekend people remember. If your hotel pool is the point, the best hotel pools guide ranks them; if you booked a cheaper room, the pool day pass guide explains buying into a better one.
Saturday night - dinner and the Arenas strip
Dinner first, then nightlife. The Arenas District is the walkable nightlife cluster; Chill Bar has the busiest sidewalk patio, and the gay bars guide and late-night food guide cover what happens after midnight. If your group is earlier to bed, the happy hour guide lists the worthwhile early deals.
Sunday - brunch and one last hour downtown
Brunch, then one downtown hour: the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Uptown vintage shops, or just coffee on Palm Canyon. Sunday farmers markets run in the morning in season. Aim to leave by early afternoon if you are driving back to LA - Sunday traffic on the I-10 is real.
If you have a third day
This plan deliberately skips Joshua Tree, Sunnylands and the tramway-to-hike combinations. With a Monday, add one of them using the three-day itinerary.
Seasonal adjustments
June to September: swap the morning hike for the Tramway, move everything outdoors before 10am or after 6pm, and expect some independent restaurants to close a day or two midweek - weekends are fine. The weather by month guide has month-by-month temperatures.
FAQ
- Is two days enough for Palm Springs?
- Yes, if you skip the day trips. Two nights covers downtown, one hike or the Tramway, real pool time and the nightlife cluster. Joshua Tree and Sunnylands need a third day.
- What should I do first on a Palm Springs weekend?
- Book Saturday dinner and Aerial Tramway timed tickets before you arrive. Both sell out on weekends, and everything else on this itinerary is flexible.
- Should I hike or take the Tramway on a short trip?
- October through May, an early Indian Canyons hike is the better desert experience. June through September, the Tramway is the safer choice because it is 30-40 degrees cooler at the top.
- Where should I stay for a weekend without a car?
- Downtown or the Uptown Design District. Both put restaurants, bars and the Art Museum within walking distance. South Palm Springs hotels are cheaper but you will drive or rideshare to dinner.
- Is Palm Springs expensive on weekends?
- Weekend and winter-season rates are the peak. Midweek and summer (July-September) rates can be half the price, in exchange for serious heat.
- What time should I leave Palm Springs on Sunday?
- By early afternoon if you are driving to Los Angeles - westbound I-10 traffic builds from about 2pm. A late brunch then a straight drive is the usual pattern.

The restaurants
Cheeky's
Brunch · Uptown Design District · $$
Cheeky's is the Palm Springs breakfast institution — a small, bright storefront on North Palm Canyon with a menu that changes weekly and a bacon flight that has become a local rite of passage. Expect five rotating strips (maple, jalapeño, chipotle and whatever the kitchen is testing), farm-egg dishes, and a sharp seasonal approach that is unusual for a breakfast place. There are maybe a dozen tables inside plus a patio, no reservations, and a line that starts before opening on winter weekends. Prices are moderate for the quality; portions are generous without being diner-sized.

Workshop Kitchen + Bar
New American · Uptown Design District · $$$
Workshop Kitchen + Bar occupies a 1920s building on North Palm Canyon that was converted into one of the most striking dining rooms in California: a soaring concrete nave lined with private booths, which won a James Beard design award. The food is modern American with a wood-fired backbone — chops, whole fish, vegetable dishes that get as much attention as the proteins — and the cocktail program is the most serious in Palm Springs. It is the valley's go-to special-occasion restaurant, and it stays busy: dinner reservations on winter weekends should be made a week or two out. Sunday brunch is quieter and just as good a way to see the room.
