What January actually feels like

January is the coldest month of the desert year and still one of the most pleasant places in the country. Typical afternoons reach the low 70s Fahrenheit with abundant sun; nights commonly drop into the 40s, and the wind off the mountains can make an evening patio feel much colder than the daytime high suggested. Rain is possible but uncommon.

Two practical consequences. First, this is prime hiking weather — Tahquitz Canyon and the Indian Canyons are at their best, and the Aerial Tramway top station can hold snow, so bring real winter layers up there. Second, the pool question matters: ask whether the pool is heated and to what temperature before booking, because an unheated pool in January is decorative.

January is the start of the real high season. Snowbirds are settled in, holiday rates roll into peak-season rates, and the film festival compresses downtown supply for nearly two weeks.
