The season in three parts

Early season, November to mid-December: highs in the mid-70s to low 80s, thinner crowds, softer rates. The valley is fully reopened after summer but has not filled yet — arguably the best value-to-weather ratio of the year.

Peak season, January to March: highs in the low 70s to low 80s, cool nights in the 40s and 50s, and demand at its annual maximum. Restaurants need reservations, golf tee times go early, and hotel rates roughly double their summer level.

Late season, April: warm and lively, dominated by the festival calendar. Weather is excellent until temperatures push into the 90s toward the end of the month.

What drives the price spikes

Two events reshape pricing across the whole valley. Modernism Week in February fills Palm Springs specifically, and the BNP Paribas Open in March fills Indian Wells, La Quinta and Palm Desert. In April, Coachella and Stagecoach at the Empire Polo Club in Indio do the same on the east end. If your dates overlap any of these, book far earlier than feels reasonable or shift a week.

Where snowbirds actually stay

Long-stay visitors cluster in the mid-valley — Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta and Indian Wells — where the golf, gated communities and monthly rentals are. Palm Springs itself skews shorter stays, design-led hotels and walkable downtown trips. Desert Hot Springs draws people who come specifically for the mineral water.

Practical notes for a long stay

• Monthly rates exist and are usually far better than nightly ones, but the good inventory is committed months in advance.
• Golf and tennis are the anchor activities; courses run their highest rates of the year in this window.
• Bring layers. A 78F afternoon can drop to the high 40s after sunset, and pool decks get genuinely cold in January evenings.
• Traffic on Highway 111 through Palm Desert and Indian Wells is heaviest between roughly 11am and 2pm in peak season.

When to come instead

If you want peak-season weather without peak-season pricing, target the first half of December or the last two weeks of April. Highs are in the 70s to 80s, the calendar is still busy, and rates ease noticeably outside the festival and tournament weeks.
