Best Day Trips From Palm Springs: Joshua Tree, Salton Sea and Idyllwild

Every one of these trips is a comfortable round trip from Palm Springs in a single day. The differences are seasonal: two are best in winter, one is best in summer, and all of them are better before noon.

Joshua Tree National Park — 1 hour, best October to April

The default day trip and the one most people should choose. Enter at the West Entrance in the town of Joshua Tree or the North Entrance in Twentynine Palms, then work east. Hidden Valley is the best short loop, Barker Dam is the easiest family walk, Keys View gives you the whole Coachella Valley from 5,100 feet, and Cholla Cactus Garden is the picture everyone comes for. Scrambles at Jumbo Rocks are the best sunset option if you are willing to drive home in the dark.

Bring more water than you think you need, fill the tank before you enter, and expect no cell service inside the park. In summer, go at sunrise and leave by 10 a.m. — midday temperatures on the park's exposed trails are genuinely dangerous.

Idyllwild — 1 hour 15 minutes, best May to October

The mountain town above Palm Springs, roughly 20 degrees cooler at 5,400 feet, reached by the switchbacks of Highway 243 from Banning or Highway 74 from Hemet. Idyllwild is a half day of walkable village browsing — bookstore, bakery, galleries, a mayor who is a dog — plus a short hike. Deer Springs and the Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail are the easy options; Suicide Rock and Tahquitz Peak are real climbs that need an early start and a permit for the wilderness areas.

Winter changes the calculus: the highways can require chains after storms, and the town becomes a snow-day destination for valley families. Check road conditions before you leave in December through March.

**Pair it with:** nothing. Idyllwild is its own slow day and the drive deserves daylight.

Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain and Bombay Beach — 1 hour, best November to March

The strangest drive in Southern California. The Salton Sea is a receding saline lake left behind by a 1905 canal accident, and its shoreline is part birding paradise, part abandoned resort. Head to Salvation Mountain first, Leonard Knight's hand-painted adobe hillside outside Niland, then wander Slab City if you are curious. Bombay Beach has an unlikely art scene built into the ruins of a lakeside town — the drive-in installation and the shoreline sculptures are the highlights.

Practicalities matter here: there is very little shade, limited food, and the smell near the water can be strong when the lake turns over. Go in cooler months, bring your own water and snacks, and fill up in Mecca or Niland.

Pioneertown — 1 hour 15 minutes, best year-round evenings

A 1940s Western movie set that became a real town. Mane Street is a short walk of frontier facades, and the reason to come is Pappy & Harriet's, the roadhouse that books touring acts far bigger than the room deserves. Check the calendar before you plan the day, reserve a table, and stack it onto a Joshua Tree afternoon.

Picking the right trip for your trip

If you have one day, go to Joshua Tree. If it is July, go to Idyllwild. If you have been to the park already or you like strange places, take the Salton Sea loop. If a band you like is playing Pioneertown, that decides itself.
