Salton Sea Day Trip: Salvation Mountain and Bombay Beach

The Salton Sea was created by accident in 1905 when the Colorado River breached an irrigation canal, briefly became a resort destination in the 1950s, and has been shrinking and salting ever since. What is left is one of the most photographed and least comfortable landscapes in California — bleak, quiet, and genuinely unforgettable.

Getting there

The north shore is about an hour from Palm Springs via Highway 111 through Mecca. Bombay Beach and Salvation Mountain sit on the east and south shores, 90 minutes to two hours out. Fuel up in Indio or Mecca; services thin out fast.

What to see

Salton Sea State Recreation Area on the north shore has the visitor centre, the shoreline access and the best introduction to what happened here. Bombay Beach, on the east shore, is a half-abandoned town that has become an unlikely art colony, with installations scattered across the salt flats. Salvation Mountain, near Niland, is Leonard Knight''s hand-built adobe and paint hillside — free, still maintained by volunteers, and the single most striking thing on the route. Slab City sits just beyond it.

When to go

November through March. Summer highs on the south shore exceed the valley''s and there is almost no shade or shelter. Morning light is best for photography and the wind picks up in the afternoon.

What to expect, honestly

The sea smells on some days — a sulphur odour from die-offs and exposed lakebed, worse in summer and with onshore wind. The shoreline in places is made of pulverised fish bone rather than sand. Dust from the exposed playa is a genuine air-quality issue; people with respiratory conditions should think twice, and everyone should keep car windows up on windy days.

Practicalities

Bring water, snacks and a full tank. Services are minimal and unreliable. Phone signal is patchy south of Mecca. There is a small, well-loved diner at Bombay Beach and a historic bar-restaurant near the north shore, but do not plan a trip around finding food.

Birdwatching

The sea is a major Pacific Flyway stop and the birding, especially at the Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge on the south end, is excellent from November to March — hundreds of species, including large flocks of snow geese and pelicans.
