Joshua Tree Day Trip From Palm Springs

Joshua Tree is the day trip everyone takes and most people half-ruin by arriving at noon. The park is 800,000 acres, has essentially no services inside, and gets its light and its temperature right early and late.

Getting there

The west entrance at Joshua Tree village is about an hour from Palm Springs via Highway 62. The north entrance at Twentynine Palms is 15 minutes further and usually less congested. The south entrance off Interstate 10 is closest to the valley in distance but drops you into the low Colorado Desert, an hour from the good rock.

Entrance fees apply per vehicle for seven days. Buy the pass online in advance to skip the queue, which on winter weekends can run 30 to 45 minutes at the west gate.

A workable one-day route

Leave by 7am. Enter at the west gate and drive Park Boulevard. Stop at Hidden Valley for the easy one-mile loop through the rock, then Barker Dam, then take the Keys View spur for the overlook across the Coachella Valley to the Salton Sea — go early, before haze builds. Continue to Skull Rock and Jumbo Rocks, then exit north through Twentynine Palms or double back.

Add Cholla Cactus Garden if you have taken the south entrance; it is 45 minutes from the main rock area and worth the drive at sunrise or sunset.

Season and heat

October through April is ideal, with cool days and cold nights — it can freeze. Summer is genuinely dangerous by midday: 100-110F, no shade, no water, and patchy phone signal. In summer, be in the park at sunrise and out by 10am.

What to bring

More water than you plan to drink — there is no reliable water inside the park. Fuel up before entering; there are no petrol stations inside. Download offline maps, because navigation apps fail in most of the park. Layers, because a 75-degree day becomes a 40-degree evening.

Where to eat and stop

Joshua Tree village and Twentynine Palms have the food. Pioneertown, 30 minutes northwest, has the region''s famous roadhouse and a walkable film-set street; it is the best add-on if you want dinner and music after the park. The Noah Purifoy outdoor sculpture museum near the village is free and takes 45 minutes.

If you would rather stay over

Sunrise and stargazing are the two things a day trip misses, and both are the best parts. Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms all have lodging, and the night sky here is Dark Sky Park quality.
