Joshua Tree Village

The village runs along Twentynine Palms Highway either side of Park Boulevard, with the west entrance station a few minutes south. It is where most park visitors stop for coffee, water and a permit question before heading in.

Lodging is mostly small inns and rentals; the desert dark is the draw at night, with Pioneertown and Pappy & Harriet's 20 minutes northwest. Days run hot in summer and can freeze on winter nights, so pack differently than for the valley floor.

From Palm Springs, allow an hour each way plus queueing at the entrance station on weekend mornings.

Getting around: distances in the Coachella Valley are deceptive. Neighbouring areas look close together but the valley runs about 45 miles end to end, so plan on a car for anything outside a walkable downtown core, and budget more driving time on festival weekends when Highway 111 and the I-10 back up.

Fill the tank and buy water in the village — there is none inside the park, and the nearest reliable fuel is back in Yucca Valley.
