Where to Stay in Joshua Tree

The town of Joshua Tree sits at 2,700 feet, about an hour from Palm Springs, and runs 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the valley floor. That makes it the summer escape and the spring bottleneck: from March through May, every bed in the Morongo Basin is spoken for well in advance.

AutoCamp Joshua Tree

Purpose-built Airstream suites plus cabins and tents around a central clubhouse and pool, five minutes from the park's west entrance. It is the most hotel-like option in town — bookable, consistent, air-conditioned, with a good pool and a fire pit at every unit. It is also the most expensive.

Joshua Tree Inn

A 1950s adobe roadside inn on the highway with a courtyard pool and rooms opening onto it. Room 8, where Gram Parsons died in 1973, is a pilgrimage booking. The inn is quiet, plain and full of character, and it is the closest thing the area has to a classic desert motel experience.

Harmony Motel

Eight rooms on a hill in Twentynine Palms, where U2 stayed while shooting The Joshua Tree. Small pool, big views, budget rates, and owners who know the park well. This is the pick if you are here to hike and just need a clean base.

Vacation rentals versus hotels

Most Joshua Tree lodging is short-term rentals — homesteads, cabins and architectural showpieces spread across the hills. They are often better value for groups but come with cleaning fees, self-check-in and long dirt drives. If it is your first visit or you want a pool and a front desk, stick with the three properties above.

Timing and practical notes

March to May and October to November are peak; summer is hot but cheap; winter nights drop below freezing. There is limited fuel and no big grocery inside the park, so stock up in Yucca Valley. Cell service is unreliable once you are past the entrance station.
