Where to Stay for Coachella and Stagecoach

The festival grounds sit in Indio, at the Empire Polo Club on Monroe Street. Everything about lodging follows from that. Hotels in Indio itself are minutes from the gates and sell out first; each city further west adds roughly ten minutes of driving and, in April, considerably more on the way home.

Indio is the practical first choice. Rooms are the valley's cheapest outside summer, the fairgrounds and Fantasy Springs are close, and the shuttle routes serve the area well. The catch is that festival-weekend rates in Indio are often set twelve months ahead and multiply the ordinary price several times over.

La Quinta is the upgrade most people should consider. It is about fifteen minutes from the grounds, Old Town gives you somewhere to eat that is not a chain, and La Quinta Resort has the pool space that matters after a nine-hour day in the sun. Palm Desert and Indian Wells are the next ring out — twenty to twenty-five minutes, more inventory, and a real chance of finding something when Indio and La Quinta are gone.

Palm Springs is where first-timers look and where the maths stops working. It is 35 to 45 minutes each way without festival traffic, which becomes a genuinely long ride at 1am. Book it only if you want the town rather than the convenience, and use the official shuttle rather than driving.

Timing matters more than city choice. Hotel inventory for April opens the previous autumn and the good value disappears within days of the lineup announcement. If your dates are fixed, book a refundable room before the lineup drops and decide later; if you are flexible, Stagecoach weekend is consistently easier to book than either Coachella weekend.

Two practical notes. Check the cancellation terms — many properties switch to non-refundable, minimum-three-night stays for festival weekends. And confirm the shuttle stop nearest your hotel before you book, because a hotel that is technically close but off the route is worse than one further away that is on it.
