Spring Break and Festival Season in Greater Palm Springs
March and April are the valley's loudest, most expensive and most fun months. Here is how to time them.

Spring is when the Coachella Valley runs at full volume. March brings the BNP Paribas Open to Indian Wells and college spring break to the Palm Springs pool decks. April brings Coachella and Stagecoach to the Empire Polo Club in Indio. Weather is close to ideal — highs in the 80s and low 90s — and lodging across all nine cities prices accordingly.
The spring calendar at a glance
- Early to mid March: spring break arrivals, warm days, busy pools, Modernism Week just finished.
- Mid March: the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden — a two-week draw that fills the mid-valley.
- April, first half: Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, typically across two weekends.
- April, late: Stagecoach country music festival at the same site.

Where to stay for each
Tennis pulls demand to Indian Wells, La Quinta and Palm Desert — anything within a short drive of the Tennis Garden. Coachella and Stagecoach pull it to Indio, Coachella and La Quinta first, then outward to Palm Desert and Palm Springs as the east end sells out. Palm Springs stays busy throughout because it is where the pool-party and design-hotel demand lives regardless of which event is on.
Festival weekends commonly carry three-night minimums and non-refundable terms. Rooms for Coachella weekends are frequently gone months ahead; the practical fallbacks are staying farther west and driving in, or shifting to the second weekend, which historically has slightly more availability.
Spring break, specifically
Palm Springs is a pool-party town in March, concentrated in the downtown and Uptown hotels. If that is the trip you want, book an adults-only or party-forward property on purpose. If it is emphatically not, the mid-valley resorts in Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert and Indian Wells stay calm, as do the quieter boutique properties and anything in Desert Hot Springs.
Weather
March highs generally run in the low 80s, April in the high 80s to mid 90s, with cool evenings into the 50s early in the season. Wind is the spring variable: the San Gorgonio Pass funnels strong afternoon gusts through Palm Springs and Cathedral City in March and April, which occasionally affects festival grounds and outdoor dining.
Getting around
Highway 111 and the I-10 corridor east toward Indio slow substantially on festival weekends, and ride-share pricing surges around the polo grounds. Build in real buffer time, or stay within walking or shuttle distance of your venue. Palm Springs International Airport runs its heaviest schedules of the year in this window, and one-way car rental pricing spikes around festival weekends.
The value windows
The first half of March, before the tennis draw, and the first two weeks of May, after Stagecoach, both give you spring-quality weather without spring pricing. Early May in particular is underrated: highs in the low 90s, everything open, and rates already easing toward summer levels.
