Palm Springs International Film Festival Guide: Tickets, Venues & Where to Stay

$$PSIFF is one of the largest film festivals in North America, and January is when Palm Springs is at its best anyway: warm afternoons, cool evenings, and the whole hospitality industry running at full speed. The festival announced January 7–18, 2027 for its next edition — twelve days of international features, documentaries, and the star-heavy Film Awards gala that effectively opens the trip for many visitors.

How the festival actually works

Screenings are spread across multiple venues in and around downtown Palm Springs rather than a single festival palace, which means your hotel location matters more than your pass level. The program mixes international and awards-contender features with documentaries, and the Film Awards gala at the start of the festival is the celebrity centerpiece — a black-tie dinner that is a separate ticket from screenings.

Passes go on sale first and make sense if you plan to see four or more films. Individual screening tickets follow closer to the festival. Popular galas and tributes sell out, but the bread-and-butter screenings usually have standby lines, and Palm Springs audiences are friendly about it. If a screening is marked sold out, showing up early for the standby queue is a legitimate strategy rather than a long shot.

Where to stay

Downtown is the answer. Festival venues cluster around Palm Canyon Drive, and the difference between a downtown hotel and anywhere else is the difference between walking to a 9pm screening and driving home in the dark. Downtown hotels book up for the opening weekend first; the middle weekdays are easier. If downtown is full, the Uptown Design District is a short ride away and the Movie Colony neighborhood sits in between.

Rates run at peak-season levels because January is peak season regardless of the festival. Book in the autumn at the latest.

Pairing it with the rest of a trip

The festival overlaps beautifully with everything else January offers: Indian Canyons and Tahquitz Canyon hikes in the morning, a matinee, dinner on Palm Canyon, then an evening screening. If you are extending the trip, Modernism Week follows a few weeks later (February 11–21, 2027), and some visitors book one long stay across both.

Practical notes

January evenings are genuinely cold by desert standards — bring a real jacket for outdoor queues and the walk back to your hotel. Matinees are the easiest tickets. And leave one day unscheduled: the best screenings are usually the ones you hear about at breakfast.$$
