The Movie Colony sits between Alejo Road and Tamarisk, a short flat walk from the north end of downtown. Streets are residential and shaded, and the hotels are small: converted estates and midcentury inns rather than resorts.

It is the best compromise in Palm Springs between walkability and quiet. You can reach downtown restaurants on foot in five to ten minutes, and hear almost nothing at night.

The Uptown Design District is a similar walk north, which makes this the most useful base for a car-light long weekend.

Getting around: distances in the Coachella Valley are deceptive. Neighbouring areas look close together but the valley runs about 45 miles end to end, so plan on a car for anything outside a walkable downtown core, and budget more driving time on festival weekends when Highway 111 and the I-10 back up.
