North Shore, Salton Sea

North Shore is the Salton Sea's closest access point from Palm Springs and the site of its most photographed piece of mid-century architecture.

The North Shore Beach & Yacht Club, designed by Albert Frey in 1959, was the social center of the sea's brief resort era and has been restored as a community center — the nautical curves and porthole windows still stand against the water. From here the shoreline runs south past the state recreation area's campgrounds and birding platforms. The beach is not sand but crushed barnacle and fish bone, which crunches underfoot and photographs like snow at golden hour. Bring water, sun protection and low expectations about services: this is a place you visit for stark landscape, birdlife and mid-century ruins, not for restaurants.
