Mane Street, Pioneertown

Built as a live-in western film set by a group of Hollywood investors, Mane Street's facades — the bathhouse, jail, saloon and post office — were designed to be filmed from the front and lived in from the back. Today the buildings hold small shops, a leather worker, a pottery studio and occasional gunfight reenactments, with dirt underfoot and the Sawtooth Mountains behind. Pappy & Harriet's sits at the end of the street and remains one of the best small music venues in California, booking national acts into a room that holds a few hundred people.
