Downtown Indio

Downtown Indio is the valley's most affordable base and the closest built-up centre to the Empire Polo Club festival grounds.

Indio's old downtown around Miles Avenue and Requa has been slowly filling in with taquerias, breweries and the city's date-farming heritage on display at the fairgrounds. It is unpolished compared with El Paseo and priced accordingly.

The reason most visitors stay here is proximity: Coachella and Stagecoach at the Empire Polo Club are minutes away, as are the fairgrounds and Fantasy Springs. Outside festival season Indio is the cheapest place in the valley to sleep.

Palm Springs is 30 minutes northwest on Interstate 10, which matters if nightlife is the plan.

Downtown Indio is one of the areas we track in Indio. This page pulls together everything on PalmSpots that sits inside it, so you can judge whether it is the right base for your trip rather than guessing from a map pin.

We do not currently list a hotel inside Downtown Indio, so most visitors stay elsewhere in Indio and drive in.

Things to do in and around Downtown Indio: Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, Shields Date Garden.

Getting around: distances in the Coachella Valley are deceptive. Neighbouring areas look close together but the valley runs about 45 miles end to end, so plan on a car for anything outside a walkable downtown core, and budget more driving time on festival weekends when Highway 111 and the I-10 back up.

Festival-weekend rates in Indio are set a year ahead — if you know your dates, book the room before the lineup drops.
