Cathedral City: Where to Stay, Eat and Shop
The valley's value base, ten minutes from downtown Palm Springs

Cathedral City is what you book when you want Palm Springs without Palm Springs pricing. It sits directly between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage on Highway 111, and it is where much of the valley's midcentury furniture trade actually lives.
Cathedral City rarely appears on a first-time itinerary, which is exactly why it works as a base. Hotels along Highway 111 and near the golf resort run noticeably cheaper than equivalent rooms in Palm Springs, and the drive to Palm Canyon Drive is about ten minutes.
The one thing here that visitors travel for is the Perez Road corridor. A run of low warehouses south of Highway 111 holds vintage dealers, upholstery shops, galleries and design studios — a lot of the midcentury furniture sold in Palm Springs showrooms passes through them first. Dealers mostly keep weekday hours and shut early on Sundays, so plan a weekday morning and expect to arrange freight if you buy anything large.
Downtown Cathedral City itself has been rebuilt around an amphitheatre and plaza, with a cinema, a fountain that children treat as a splash pad, and a small cluster of restaurants. The food is unshowy and good value: taquerias, Thai, breakfast places that fill with locals rather than visitors.
The honest trade-off is street life. Cathedral City is not walkable in the way downtown Palm Springs is, and evenings are quiet. Treat it as a well-placed, well-priced place to sleep with one genuinely worthwhile shopping district attached, and it earns its place on the map.
