A steep, fully exposed four-mile out-and-back climbing roughly 1,000 feet from a trailhead on Highway 111 in Palm Desert to a viewpoint over the whole mid-valley. Locals use it as a daily workout and the parking lot is full by 7am on winter weekends. There is no shade and no water anywhere on the route, so it becomes genuinely dangerous by mid-morning from April through October.

Hours: Sunrise to sunset — closed seasonally for bighorn sheep. Best for a hard morning hike.
