Bump and Grind Trail

Palm Desert

A steep, fully exposed four-mile out-and-back climbing roughly 1,000 feet from a trailhead on Highway 111 in Palm Desert to a viewpoint over the whole mid-valley. Locals use it as a daily workout and the parking lot is full by 7am on winter weekends. There is no shade and no water anywhere on the route, so it becomes genuinely dangerous by mid-morning from April through October. Bump and Grind Trail is activity in Palm Desert. Filed under hiking. Notable for steep, valley views, dog friendly. Hours: Sunrise to sunset — closed seasonally for bighorn sheep. Best for a hard morning hike. Summer changes everything here: many independent bars, spas and shops cut hours or close for a few weeks between July and September, while the same places are busiest from January through April and during festival weekends.
